Frequently Asked Questions
When are sessions held?
RYL programming operates yearly from September through March. The schedule consists of an opening retreat, seven sessions focusing on a variety of topics and concluding with a graduation celebration. The dates, times, and locations are listed on the session schedule and will vary from year to year. Students are asked to mark session dates in their calendar to avoid conflicts when possible. The retreat in September is mandatory. All other sessions begin at 7:45 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m. The RYL Program Director or a volunteer typically arrive by 7:30 am for those that need to be dropped off early.
Where are sessions held?
Sessions are held at various locations throughout Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. You are responsible for your own transportation to and from the session sites however transportation assistance may be available through a grant from Cincinnati Children's Hospital. You may drive, have your parents drop you off and pick you up, or car pool with other students. If you are not driving, please be sure you have made arrangements to be dropped off and picked up on time. Logistical information will be sent to you approximately one week before each session. Please check the directions when you receive them and plan your route if you are not familiar with the area.
Is breakfast & lunch provided?
Students are encouraged to eat breakfast before leaving home. However, we will have light breakfast items available during the morning. Many of our meals are donated so we may not be able to accommodate all special dietary needs so students are encouraged to pack their own meals. If we know the menu in advance we will share those details in the session reminder message. Lunch is always provided during the session.
Is there transportation assistance?
Students are encouraged to car-pool when possible. However, thanks to the generosity of community partners, we are able to offer transportation assistance. We have partnered with Elite Taxi, a taxi company based in Covington, KY. RYL will act as an intermediary between the student and Elite Taxi to arrange pick up and drop off. If you are interested in this option, please contact our office. An additional waiver is required before transportation can be arranged.
What if I am unable to attend a session?
Development of a successful leadership class takes time and commitment. You must be there for the experience and for your voice to be heard. That’s why your RYL attendance will be closely monitored. Please notify our office in advance of any absence when possible. Two absences will result in dismissal from the program. We understand there may be times when you must miss for a school function, exam, or other commitment. If you do not attend a session and we have not been notified, we will contact your school. As a reminder, the retreat is mandatory and you are expected to attend.
What if there is bad weather?
In case of inclement weather, please check your email the morning of the session for updates. Cancellations will also be sent through the Remind text message system.
How is the school notified of RYL sessions?
Your school will be sent an email notice about a week before each session. The email is sent to your school contact, usually your guidance counselor. If he/she does not notify the school office, they may try to contact you. Therefore, it is best to remind the office or give them a copy of your schedule. Your principal has approved these days as excused absences when he/she approved your application. It is your responsibility to remind your teachers and retrieve any assignments.
What do I wear for RYL Sessions?
With the exception of the retreat at Camp Ernst, attire for RYL sessions will fall into two categories: smart casual or business casual. Specific attire information will be included in the monthly session reminder. The Pinterest boards below may help to answer your specific questions.
