The outdoor retreat provides an opportunity to examine individual leadership skills and styles and how these characteristics aid in leadership development. Students will explore team dynamics and their role within a newly formed team. This session will provide a setting for students to begin connecting as a class before formal programming begins.

Why: The outdoor retreat is important as it provides you with an opportunity to examine your individual leadership skills and your role within a team. You will learn things about yourself and your classmates. As stated in the RYL application and the acceptance/commitment letter, the retreat is mandatory. It is an essential ingredient to your successful RYL experience. If you are unable to attend, please contact our office immediately. |

Tentative Agenda: 8:30 am | Arrival & Check In Begins 9:00 am | Formal Programming Begins 9:35 am | Break 11:30 am | Lunch 12:30 pm | High Ropes Safety Discussion 3:30 pm | Estimated Dismissal Directions: Click here to access Camp Ernst's website. When you arrive, look for the main entrance adjacent to the lake. Follow the drive past the Welcome Center and look for signs to Lakeview Lodge. Parking: Students that plan to drive themselves are asked to park in the gravel lot labeled 'Dodgeball' on the map. As you pass the Welcome Center the road will curve and end at the gravel lot. Just take a slight left to access the lot. Drop Off: Students may be dropped off at Lakeview Lodge. The one-way drive will take you past Lakeview Lodge and allow parents to circle back towards the Welcome Center to exit camp. Pick Up: We will spend the afternoon at the Discovery Course and Day Camp Pavilion. Parents are welcome to park in the Dodgeball gravel lot to wait for their student. What to Wear: Comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. We will be outdoors participating in team building activities throughout the day. Please dress according to the weather (jackets, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.). We will provide you with a t-shirt upon arrival. Preparation: It’s a long day and you will be exhausted when you get home. Do your homework ahead of time – not Sunday night! Make the commitment to get to know as many different students as possible. Acknowledge and share your talents and abilities in a positive way. Be open to new ideas. Be prepared to step out of your comfort zone and have fun! What if it rains? The retreat will go on as planned however we may dismiss early as we cannot utilize the Discovery Course if there is thunder, lightning, or high winds. |
Note: If you have concerns about the activities, please know that Camp Ernst staff uses experiential teaching techniques and a philosophy of “challenge by choice” to encourage participants to challenge themselves and their group. This means you set your own goals for each event and only positive support is acceptable.
