Retreat | Sunday, September 13, 2020 | Camp Ernst
The outdoor retreat provides you with an opportunity to examine your individual leadership skills and styles and how these characteristics will shape you as leaders. You will look at team dynamics and your role within a team. This session will provide a setting for you to learn more about yourselves, your classmates, and your class as a team.
Where: Camp Ernst | 7615 Camp Ernst Rd. | Burlington, KY 41005
Directions: Click here to access Camp Ernst's website. When you arrive, look for the main entrance adjacent to the lake. Follow the drive past the Welcome Center and look for signs to Lakeview Lodge. Parking is available for students that plan to drive themselves.
What to Wear: Something comfortable and tennis shoes! We will be moving and participating in activities throughout the day. Please dress according to the weather. We will provide you with a t-shirt at Orientation and request that you wear it to the retreat. Feel free to wear another shirt underneath it if it is chilly or bring a jacket if it looks like rain.
Why: The outdoor retreat is important because it provides you with an opportunity to examine your individual leadership skills and your role within a team. You will get a chance to learn some things about yourself and your classmates. As stated in the RYL application and the acceptance/commitment letter, the retreat is mandatory. It is an essential ingredient to your successful RYL experience. If you are unable to attend, please contact our office immediately. You don’t want to miss this… the one-day retreat is always a favorite of our students!
Preparation: It’s a long day and you will be exhausted when you get home. Do your homework ahead of time – not Sunday night! Make the commitment ahead of time to get to know as many different students as possible. Don’t be shy! Acknowledge and share your talents and abilities in a positive way. Be open to new ideas. Be prepared to step out of your comfort zone and have fun!
Note: If you have concerns about the activities, please know that Camp Ernst staff uses experiential teaching techniques and a philosophy of “challenge by choice” to encourage participants to challenge themselves and their group. This means you set your own goals for each event and only positive support is acceptable.
